Friday 23 October

8.00pm
Martin Shrubsole: Controlling Somesay Island (Garden) Railway 1983 to date

Somesay Island Railway (1:24 scale on 32mm gauge track) was always developed as a line that visitors ran rather than just observed. For 20 years, on six Bank Holidays, the layout was opened for visitors to operate, and to raise money for Marie Carie Cancer care.

In the course of one visit a newcomer would be introduced to the operating rules and would play an active part in running a timetable. This clinic traces how the track-layout evolved to accommodate up to 30 participants, and considers the rules and “aides memoires” that kept them on the right lines. Over time many brought friends and “other generations”.

Fxamples of all working documents and track-plans will be available at the clinic.

9.00pm
Paul Hobbs: Belt Lines and Terminal Railroads

Beltlines and Terminal Railroads are a particular form of railway, usually urban, serving a location for the mutual benefit of owning railroads. Sometimes they are owned by a municipality. We will discuss examples, large and small, and suggest modelling possibilities.

Mick Moignard MMR®: DCC – High Momentum Operation

DCC control has progressed a long way since its early beginnings. Now, rather than just another way to control our models, if offers for real prototypical operation of the trains with sound and inertia, replicating hundreds of tones of steel and wood in out few grams of plastic and mazac. This clinic will discuss why High Momentum Operation is so captivating, and then go on to show how you can set up the most popular sound decoders to make it all happen.

Ray Persing MMR®: 3D Printing

Everything you wanted to know about getting started with resin-based 3D printing, from choosing a printer to finishing the model and getting it on your layout.

2.30pm
Alan Sewell: “Everything But The Shadow”

A review of the rail transport of logs, lumber and forest products as the basis of a model railroad.

Forest products are an important source of traffic on North America’s railroads and represent a source of interest to modellers. This includes hauling logs and lumber but also the requirements of the pulp and paper industry and the short line railroads that serve these. Geographically the industry is located over much of North America but the Pacific North West, the Southern States and parts of the North East predominate.

Alan has built his H0 layout based on the industry in the Pacific North West using typical operations and equipment found in the industry from the mid-1950’s. The clinic will be illustrated with photos from Alan’s visits and his collection looking at those operations he has modelled and others which may inspire something new
