Stanley Spencer Gallery Talk & Walk

One of the most famous Cookham residents is the renowned artist, Stanley Spencer.

Stanley became well known for his paintings depicting Biblical scenes occurring as if in Cookham, the small village beside the River Thames where he was born and spent much of his life. Spencer referred to Cookham as “a village in Heaven” and in his biblical scenes, fellow-villagers are shown as their Gospel counterparts.

What does a Talk and Walk involve?

The Talk consists of a tour of the Stanley Spencer Gallery, with a talk by one of the Gallery’s experienced Volunteers. Following a talk in the gallery, we offer a guided walk around the village, looking at some of the scenes and landmarks which Spencer portrayed in his Cookham paintings, discovering some of the stories attached to them

Each Talk and Walk is led by one of the Gallery’s experienced volunteers. A Talk in the Gallery normally takes one hour (and includes a guided tour around part of the current exhibition).  A Guided Walk around Stanley Spencer’s Cookham also normally takes one hour.

When is the Talk & Walk?

Sunday 27th, morning. 10am start at the Gallery

What is the cost of the Talk & Walk?

£15 per person. This price INCLUDES admission charge to the gallery. No further concessions apply.

What happens to the Walk if it rains?

A Walk will go ahead whatever the weather so please wear suitable clothing!  However, if the rain is really heavy we may spend a little time in Holy Trinity Church (Stanley’s painting The Resurrection, Cookham was set in the churchyard here).

The Gallery has wheelchair access and a lift to the mezzanine floor.  The Gallery has an accessibility policy that I can send to you on request.

Is there a shop in the Gallery?

Yes, a small one, selling the current exhibition catalogue, postcards, books and selected Stanley Spencer prints.
